“I removed grains, legumes and dairy from my diet (Paleo diet). The menstrual cramps became almost non existent as did the PMS. It’s now been 16 months 100% PMS free, and since adding magnesium to my supplements 100% menstrual cramp free.” –Julianne, a New Zealand registered nurse and nutritionist
We have short cycles. We have long cycles. We have, sometimes, no cycles. We have light cycles. We have heavy cycles. We have pain. We have bloating. We have cravings. We have serious mood swings. UGH. Double UGH! “Primary dysmenorrhea is caused by strong contractions of the uterus trigged by prostaglandins, chemicals in the body that are involved in inflammation and that stimulate pain receptors. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more menstrual pain,” University of Maryland.
Did it ever occur to you that your monthly experience can improve, or better yet, go away completely – just because you eliminated some dietary habits? Get rid of your Pamprin and Midol for good! I, personally, can attest that my pain has 100% disappeared. It’s kind of magical.
“The best way to relieve painful menstrual cramps is to take an anti-inflammatory medication.” emedicinehealth.com. Most internet resources are going to point you to the nearest grocery store for some over-the-counter non-prescription agents. Others are going to promote exercise (especially walking?), heating pads, abdominal massage, and orgasmic sexual activity. Few, like the University of Maryland (UMM), are going to recommend a change in diet including the elimination of refined grains, processed foods, and fried foods. Others might say eliminate smoking, drinking, caffeine and get more sleep. It took me at least a month of grain and dairy elimination (in addition, anything that had a word I couldn’t pronounce or explain) to see cold, hard results where I felt absolutely no pain/bloating. The minute I went back to a regular routine, the pain came back the next time around. Grains cause inflammation. Taking them out means we no longer have inflammation anywhere in our body.
