Lets talk about Meat

Animal Foods The Primal Blueprint, Page 117-119

Author, Mark Sisson, dispels conventional wisdom that vegetarianism is healthier and a diet high in animal foods lead to obesity and heart disease.  Animal foods will help you reduce excess body fat, help accelerate brain performance, build lean muscle, and generally promote peak performance.  Grok, the prototypical preagricultural human, received his bulk calories (45%-85%) from eating a variety of animal life.  Those living near the equator ate more plants, and those living in colder latitudes ate more meat.

You’ve probably heard that red meat is associated with an increased risk for cancer and heart disease.  “In all studies to date, there has been no distinction or separation between groups who consumed organic, hormone free, 100% grass fed or otherwise “clean” red meat versus the vast majority of participants who at the standard hormone-laden, grain-fed, antibiotic-laced meats.”  These studies include participants that self-reported their dietary intake in which processed meats such as salami, bologna, breakfast sausage, bacon, hot dogs, and chemically treated jerky are included in the red meat category.  These foods contain preservatives that act as potential carcinogens, plus lack essential nutrients from mechanical processing, added preservatives, artificial colors, and sweeteners.  Mass-produced ranch animals can contain hormones to make them bigger, pesticides (contaminated in their food source), and antibiotics (to prevent widespread illnes resulting from consuming immune-suppressing feed and living in filthy, cramped, artificial conditions).

You’ve probably heard that overcooking meat is associated with increased risks due to heat-altered chemical by-products called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) which may be carcinogenic if consumed frequently over long periods of time.  Here’s the reality: mankind has been cooking meat over a fire for hundreds of thousands of years.  We’ve developed genetic adaptations to allow properly cooked  foods without problems.  Studies also show that consuming antioxidant rich foods along with cooked meats can essentially neutralize HCAs during digestion.  Eliminate high heat barbeque, deep fried, or eating raw meat will help eliminate the risk all together.

Local Southern IN Fischer Farms: They are most-likely to have the best meat around.  Their animals are antibiotic and hormone free.  If a sick animal is treated with antibiotics, it is removed from their Natural Beef & Pork program.  You can find their meat at local restaurants such as Nick’s, Cafe Pizzaria, Lennies, Upland Brewery, and Restaurant Tallent; you can also purchase their meat to take home at Bloomingfoods and Sahara Mart.   http://www.ffnatural.com/what_is_natural_beef.htm

American Grassfed Beef: They are located in Missouri and their animals are grass-fed.  Grains have a similar affect on their bodies as humans.  Consuming animals that don’t consume grains will in turn have higher levels of healthy omega-3 and monosaturated fats.  They are offering free shipping right now if you want to try em out! http://www.americangrassfedbeef.com
